Savannah Lakes Village to Host in April NGA/Hooters Tour Event for Aspiring Pros

Savannah Lakes Village: Championship course & event.

The National Golf Association’s Hooters Professional Golf Tour, presented by Hooters of America and Naturally Fresh Foods, returns to Savannah Lakes Village April 26-May 2 for The 2010 Savannah Lakes Village Classic, 2010 presented by McCormick County. Request more information.

A portion of the proceeds from The 2010 Savannah Lakes Village Classic will go to benefit The Ed Meyer First Responders.

The 2010 Savannah Lakes Village Classic will be the second major tournament of the season with a purse of $250,000 with an estimated $40,000 going to the winner.

“The #1 goal of The Hooters Tour has always been, and always will be to help professional golfers achieve their dream of playing on The PGA Tour,” said Robin L. There will be a Savannah Lakes Village Junior Clinic held Monday, April 26, 2010 at 4:30 for selected McCormick County middle school students interested in learning the fundamentals of golf.  Also on Monday there will be the Palmetto Angler Fishing Tournament for all the Hooters Tour players. The Savannah Lakes Village Shootout will be Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at 1:30.  The shootout is an alternate shot format in which a professional is paired with an amateur and one team is eliminated each hole until one team remains and on Wednesday April 28th there will be pro-am sponsored by Lakeland’s Orthopaedic that gives amateurs the chance to play with the future stars of the PGA TOUR.

The NGA/Hooters Tour is the third largest men’s 72-hole professional golf tour in the U.S. behind the PGA and Nationwide Tours. All told, the NGA/Hooters Tour’s alumni have an impressive 11 majors to their credit.

The NGA/Hooters Tour has helped more than 100 professionals acquire their PGA, Senior PGA, and Nationwide Tour cards. In fact, 48% of the players that earned their 2010 PGA Tour card, and 53% of the players that earned full exempt status on the Nationwide Tour started their careers on the NGA/Hooters Tour. Reserve at Lake Keowee, SC: Getaway Weekend offered.

The Reserve at Lake Keowee community, together with its Community Foundation, announced today two 2010 initiatives to support local artists. The community has named landscape photographer John Smith its 2010 Artist in Residence. It has also committed to a Collector-level sponsorship of ARTISPHERE, Greenville’s Arts Weekend, by offering an “ARTISPHERE Getaway Weekend” contest that features accommodations and activities at The Reserve coupled with $1,000 spending money at ARTISPHERE. “The vibrance of the local arts in and around the Upstate has always enhanced families’ decisions to own property or live at The Reserve,” comments Mike Agee, the community’s director of marketing. “Our owners and our management team recognize the importance of supporting the arts, and hosting a local artist through our Artist in Residence program, as well as this year, coming alongside ARTISPHERE in a significant way, are ways that we can do our fair share to promote the arts as a company and as a community.”

Artist in Residence
Now in its third year, The Reserve’s Artist in Residence program allows The Reserve to share the natural beauty of its community with artists so that they may experience a peaceful retreat that gives them outreach opportunities and time for reflection and inspiration.

The program is funded by The Reserve’s Community Foundation and includes a visit to The Reserve, classes and field trips open to owners and the public, and other community outreach initiatives in and around the property. The Arts are one of four focus areas around which the Community Foundation was founded in 2008.

ARTISPHERE Weekend Getaway
The Reserve will be a Collector-level sponsor of ARTISPHERE, Greenville’s Arts Weekend taking place May 7-9th. Valued at $2,500, The Reserve’s sponsorship will include partnering with ARTISPHERE to create and promote a two-night, three-day weekend at The Reserve, complete with overnight accommodations, on-site activities, two weekend VIP hospitality passes to enjoy ARTISPHERE and a $1,000 gift certificate to spend on art at ARTISPHERE.

The “ARTISPHERE Getaway Weekend” contest kicked off on February 2nd on the ARTISPHERE web site – www.ARTISPHERE.us - and will be promoted through advertising in local media and tourist publications in key drive-to markets that include Charlotte and Atlanta. Nine-Year-Old Performs National Anthem in Sign Language at Lakewood Ranch Polo

Lakewood Ranch: Golf, 8,500 acres and polo, too.

Nine-year-old polo fan Levi Waxler is giving the audience a new pre-game treat at Lakewood Ranch Polo matches this season, by accompanying singers of the National Anthem with his sign language skills. 

Learning sign language has become a hobby for the Braden River Elementary fourth grader, who only started studying two years ago, but has entranced crowds with his soulful signing.

“We taught him the alphabet one day on a plane ride,” said Tanya Waxler, Levi’s mom, “and since then he cannot get enough! He’s like a sponge and wants to soak up everything about the language—we finally had to get him a tutor.” 

Levi has now signed the National Anthem twice at polo games this season, while local singer Nancy Apatow sings beside him.

“We’ve invited him to come perform at every game if he would like,” said Maggie Mitchell, Polo Club manager. “The fans love it and he is such an adorable and expressive little boy—he really gives it his all.”

Levi, who is not hearing impaired, says he enjoys sign language because it is a different way to communicate.  He also enjoys karate, baseball, and unicycling. “I can even do sign language while I’m on my unicycle,” he said.

Performing at polo is just the beginning for this 9-year-old. His ultimate goal is to perform the National Anthem at Tropicana Field.

We want to begin our New Year's message with a word of thanks to our communities, thanks both to the 14 new communities already signed up to join the GCH Network in 2010 and thanks to our loyal marketing partners who have stayed with us during the past two years--a difficult time for our industry.

The people in our industry are resilient if nothing else. The shifting landscape has caused widespread upheaval to communities and their employees. But in the wake of such turmoil I keep receiving news about how communities are working with their residents to stay solid and how new companies and new concepts are being launched.

At the beginning of this decade, GolfCourseHome.net itself was launched in the face of the dot-com meltdown. At first blush it appeared a case of bad timing, but it was actually the best time to get started.

The amenity community industry is filled with smart, innovative people--Bill Houghton, Jamie Prince, Ian McIvaine and Karen Cerrati immediately come to mind--who have started businesses in the past year and bring energy and ideas to their clients.

It is my hope for the New Year that the creativity, energy and shoulder-to-the-wheel hard work unleashed by the current sea-change in the marketplace will be rewarded with a rising tide that will take us to a new and sustainable period of success and accomplishment. Oak Marsh Golf Course at Amelia Island Plantation Will Reopen Monday, Feb. 15th

The Oak Marsh Golf Course at Amelia Island Plantation will reopen next Monday, February 15th.  The Pete Dye-designed course is noted for its tight fairways and small greens, meandering along serpentine salt marsh creeks and through the moss draped oaks for which Amelia Island is famous.  The original closure from early summer was extended due to the effects of reduced golf rounds in the industry. 

At par 72, this 6,500- yard course has 14 holes with water hazards and numerous bulkheaded greens. A variety of bunkers are placed throughout the course to add to the challenge and a natural approach has been maintained as well with the use of coquina shell cart paths, native plant life and preserved habitats for the local wildlife. 

Oak Marsh’s par-four eighth hole is a typical Dye design, challenging players to cross two tidal creeks before reaching the raised narrow green.  The 171-yard sixteenth is an ideal layout for the novice and presents the more skilled golfer with a tantalizing risk-reward proposition, confronting each player’s skill level.

Amelia Island Plantation, Florida’s natural island destination, is nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Amelia River, just 29 miles northeast of Jacksonville International Airport. Request more information.

Construction Begins on the New Lakefront Beach Club at The Cliffs at Keowee Springs

Construction is underway on the lakefront Beach Club at The Cliffs at Keowee Springs.

This multi-faceted oasis will provide members with two main swimming areas that overlook the stunning waters of Lake Keowee. The first will have a beach entry and include water spouts for small children, and a lap pool for singles, couples and exercise classes.

The other main swimming area will feature water slides for families and children. Adjacent to both pools will be a picturesque pavilion, perfect for family gatherings and picnics. The scheduled completion date for the Beach Club at Keowee Springs is Memorial Day, 2010.
