Bay Club Member Peter Uihlein tops David Chung to win U.S. Amateur Championship

Another highlight: Uihlein celebrating going undefeated at last year's Walker Cup.

Peter Uihlein, a junior at Oklahoma State and a member at The Bay Club golf community, Mattapoisett, MA, delivered a dominating performance Sunday at Chambers Bay, beating David Chung, 4 and 2, to capture the 110th U.S. Amateur Championship--a sublime 21st birthday present to himself and his home club. Mirabel, AZ, & Members to Retire Bridge Loan & Become Debt-Free in October

Mirabel debt-free for future generations.

Mirabel, the award-winning private golf club in North Scottsdale, announced today their members have voted to retire the bridge loan it received from the club’s former owner’s Terrabrook, the land development subsidiary of Westbrook Partners LLC.

As part of the Club turnover in October of 2009, Terrabrook loaned $1.4 million to Mirabel’s private club to help assure a smooth transition to member-controlled status.

Solid membership growth and productivity initiatives following the turnover along with an additional equity investment by members, reflecting their confidence in the club’s future, will allow Mirabel to prepay the loan in full this October, leaving Mirabel debt-free--an enviable position in today’s private club market.

“This is a significant development for Mirabel,” said Bob Sheppard, Mirabel President.  “Our Members, Board of Directors and Club Management have worked diligently to put Mirabel in this position. We truly love the camaraderie and lifestyle Mirabel provides its members, their families and friends.  By retiring this loan and staking out a clear, stable financial future for the club, we can rest easy that Mirabel will provide the same exceptional private club experience to generations of members to come.”

Memberships Available

Mirabel currently is offering equity and a limited number of non-equity golf memberships. Equity golf memberships are available with an initiation fee of $75,000. The initiation-fee for non-equity golf memberships is $40,000. Social memberships are available with an initiation fee starting at $15,000. Property ownership is not required for membership in Mirabel.

A capacity crowd of 60 members and guests teed off in a shotgun start event on the Bill Love-designed layout. Afterward, many toured the back nine, which is slated to open this fall. Carolina Colours, NC, Opens Front Nine with Capacity Crowd, Rave Reviews

The front nine of the Carolina Colours golf course opened last Friday, July 30, with a capacity crowd of 60 members and special guests teeing off for a shotgun blitz. The golf community is located in New Bern, NC.

"Architect Bill Love has created one of his best, a course that fits the terrain, but doesn't overpower it," noted developer Kenneth Kirkman in praise of the course.

Following golf, many players toured the back nine, scheduled to open this fall, and gained a true appreciation of what the course will be. The back nine winds through the woods, with two bridges spanning Brice Creek and its wetland, cypress-dotted fringes.

"It is like no other 9 in coastal Carolina," said Kirkman with pride.

Finally adjourning to the Clubhouse for cocktails and dinner, the golfers joined their non-playing spouses and other community property owners for the final episode in what was a great day for Carolina Colours.

Savannah High Schooler, 17, Creates "Skidaway Getaway" for Military Families

Military wives and their children enjoy the Skidaway Getaway.

The Landings on Skidaway Island recently partnered with 17-year-old Savannah resident, Ben Adler, to put together a “Skidaway Getaway” for local military families. His idea for the Getaway was based on “Operation Rest & Relax,” a Hilton Head Island concept that helps servicemen reconnect with their spouses and children after tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Ben, a senior at Savannah Country Day School, started working on his proposal in February, and then met with representatives of The Landings Club to get their support to hold the event at The Club.

$2,000 Raised
After that, he met with the catering and activity staff to set all the particulars up. Landings Club staff and residents loved the idea and worked with Ben to raise more than $2,000 in three weeks and to find volunteers to help make the event extraordinary.

On July 24, 2010, 18 families, most of them with a loved one overseas, enjoyed a day at The Landings. They jumped into the Franklin Creek pool with its waterslide, took walks on the nature trails, swung at the driving range and enjoyed a catered lunch at The Landings Plantation Club.

Even 'Better Next Summer"
Landings residents and club staff were honored to meet the families of the deployed soldiers and to treat them to a special day in their community.

“The families were glad to know that we appreciate the sacrifices their soldiers are making for us all,” said Ben. “We want to continue this if possible and hopefully it will be bigger and better next summer.”
