The antithesis of plastic (vinyl) homes without character and brimming with warmth and unity with nature, the American Bungalow has come to the forefront of popuarlity again.
The bungalow became America's first national house design from 1880 to 1930 and could be found in every region of the country. Bungalows are usually one or one-and-a-half story with at least one bedroom on the first floor and have a large front porch.
Rafter tails, decorative brackets and natural materials such as stone, wood clapboard and shake shingles grace their exteriors. Porch columns are often tapered (smaller at the top and wider at the bottom) giving them the appearance of anchoring the home to the earth.
They may have pergolas with vining ivy or flowers that bond the bungalow even more with its natural surroundings. They are usually seen in a natural setting but can also be found in more urban environments in walking distance to town conveniences. Send me more information.
As Gustav Stickley, one of the leaders of the American Arts and Crafts movement in the early 20th century said, bungalows are based on the "fundamental principals of honesty, simplicity and usefulness--the kind of houses that children will rejoice all their lives to remember as home."
