Wins India Award for documentary.
EDGARTOWN, MA – Zeb- Schooner Life, a film documentary produced by Detrick Lawrence Productions of Edgartown, has been honored with an India Award, in a California-based competition which receives entries from around the world. The award was given for a documentary which features “exceptional achievement in craft and creativity, standing above other productions.”
The film, written and directed Gordon Massingham of Tisbury, MA, explores the life and times of Captain Zeb Tilton – who kept alive a way of life, moving freight under sail, long after others had consigned it to the dustbin of history. The film also tells the story of the Alice S. Wentworth, his iconic schooner and role of schooners in American maritime history. The film includes thirty interviews with people who knew Zeb, schooner experts, and historians as well as old photographs and archival footage from museums, libraries, and individuals.
The Indie is an award known for its rigorous evaluation process. Awards go to those filmmakers who produce fresh, standout entertainment and compelling documentaries. Massingham, no stranger to film festival awards having won more than 140, says, ‘film festivals these days are increasingly competitive, so while it’s extraordinarily difficult to get into a festival, it’s a major accomplishment to win an award.” Zeb - Schooner Life also received the prestigious Best of Show Award from the Accolade Competition.
Detrick Lawrence, located in Edgartown since 1999, has produced some 200 films. ZEB- Schooner Life is based on the book “Zeb, Celebrated Schooner Captain of Martha’s Vineyard,” by Polly Burroughs and premiered this past summer at Vineyard Haven’s Capawock Theater and is currently booking screenings for the coming summer.
