Vineyard Open
House, a new real estate firm opening in Vineyard Haven, celebrated its Grand
Opening in a series of open houses Wednesday September 25 and October 2. Owner
David Lott and Broker Mary Sullivan, both of Vineyard Haven, welcomed friends,
family and local businesses to the event.
“We wanted to
thank all the people who have been supportive of us, have given us
encouragement, ideas and their enthusiasm,” said Lott, who built his first home
on the island in 1973 at the age of 22.

“Mary and I are
really excited about finally opening our doors and then welcoming our first
listing—all in the first week of officially being open for business. Quite a
wonderful way to get started, ” said Lott.
The new business
is located on Union St. in Vineyard Haven opposite Murdick’s Fudge and will
offer full services for the buying, selling and renting of real estate. Its
in-town location features a “digital showroom” which showcases the firm’s more
than 40 web sites, blogs and social media.

“The digital
showroom is a way to not only present all the real estate available on the
island and at resort communities around the country,” said Lott. “But to also
demonstrate the varied array of internet tools we have at our disposal to
market our clients’ properties. ”
“We’re ready to go,” said Sullivan, who is
also a lawyer and notary public.

Deep Island Roots – Red Stocking Fund
The Lott family has deep roots on Martha’s Vineyard, having been coming to the
island since the 1890s. Lott’s grandfather, Harris Crist, retired to Vineyard
Haven in 1936 from his position as co-owner of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle
newspaper.
Crist had a 5-BR residence (93 Main) built overlooking the harbor and lived
there until he passed in 1946. An avid golfer, Crist played nearly every day of
the year at the Oak Bluffs Country Club, a nine-hole layout which eventually
became Farm Neck Golf Club.
His wife Addie Crist became an organist
for Grace Church. Her greatest legacy is the Red Stocking Fund which she
started in 1938 with a few friends who knitted six red Christmas stockings and
filled them with gifts for needy island children. The Red Stocking Fund has
since grown exponentially and last year distributed toys and clothing to more
than 400 islanders.
