There's a story that goes with this wonderful vacation rental in West Tisbury, Martha's Vineyard. I had been showing homes for more than 13 months to the lovely, young couple who now owns it. After viewing 63 homes (and a total of 66) and enduring two unsuccessful offers, we turned into a long driveway.
The driveway was lined with trees that partially obscured a comely two-story home with silvery cedar-shingle siding and a red-brick center chimney. A deep emotional feeling came over everyone in the car and we just looked at each and knew: We had found that special Vineyard home.
Families will convene in the living room for TV, music, games and on chilly evenings, a fire.
When we went inside, our thoughts were confirmed as we went from room to room--from the relaxing living room with fireplace to the rough pines walls of the writer's room on the second floor.
Here, especially, was a room made for creativity--complete with a pair of windows flanking a simple wood desk crowned by a manual typewriter with a sheet of paper already set in it and waiting for the first inspired taps on the keys.
The Writer's Room: Good not only for writing, but also reading, sewing, knitting, thinking, etc..
Set on two acres with a generous front deck and screened-in porch, this island retreat is perfect for families who want to reconnect, yet be near classic Vineyard experiences such as the iconic Alley's General Store, the Field Gallery, the new West Tisbury Library, the old Grange and its weekly Farmers' and Artists' Markets and Look's Pond.
The master bedroom enjoys joyous, light-filled morning views.
A total of four bedrooms can accommodate up to eight people, plus there's a pull-out futon in the living room for extra guests.
You'll have easy access to great restaurants, but you'll prefer grilling on the deck and lazing on the screened-in porch. Amenities include gas grill, lobster pot, two flat-screen TVs, high-speed WiFi, basic cable and Netflix.
Simple pleasures such as sitting down and eating with family are revived here.
Weekly and monthly rentals are available. And since these photos were taken, rooms have been repainted, new furniture has been added and the kitchen restocked.
Best of all, from your vacation home here, you can take advantage of access to private Lambert's Cove beach, or ramble along the path to a private pond and enjoy a sunrise/sunset paddle.--David Lott
