Kingsmill on the James River, VA: First stop on Evelyn's trip.
Last winter, GolfCourseHome ran a contest called "Describe
Your Perfect Day at a Master-Planned Community." The winner
was Evelyn Khan of New York. Her prize was a weekend at a
community of her choice. She recently returned home and
wrote the following account of her trip.
My husband and I are empty nesters ready to downsize and
move on to the next phase in our lives. With many life-
changing events about to take place, we are on a journey to
find that perfect home and community.
Set Priorities First
For those of you who have been faced with the decision of
“where do we go,” you know that setting priorities is a must.
We created a list of criteria we desired in our dream
community.
With the majority of our family living in New Jersey (close to
our New York home), our No. 1 priority was finding a
community within a half-day drive from NJ. One area featured
on GolfCourseHome that met our criteria was Williamsburg,
Virginia.
Thanks to Publisher David Lott, we were connected with real
estate agents from Liz Moore & Associates -- many thanks to
Ellen Gajda for providing tours of Kingsmill on the James,
Ford’s Colony and Colonial Heritage, and to Susan Krancer
for providing a challenge to my husband and son on the
Woods Course, one of the three 18-hole championship courses
at Kingsmill. Not only did they enjoy the challenge and pristine
beauty of this course, but the curious owl watching their game
added an extra touch of wonder.
In addition to great golf, tennis also flourishes at Kingsmill.
Kingsmill on the James, Williamsburg, VA
The first community we toured was Kingsmill on the James.
What we found advantageous about Kingsmill is that it is
both a community of 2,300 homeowners and a resort. The
community has a wide range of home styles and prices.
Entering through the gates of Kingsmill, you are immediately
struck by the perfectly manicured grounds and great walking
trails.
Our visit was timed perfectly…..the 1st day of spring and an
abundance of daffodils and forsythias greeted us (as well as a
smiling gate keeper). We met Ellen at the Resort & Spa area,
where we found the Sports Center, Tennis Center, full-service
luxury Spa, numerous restaurants and pro shop.
Evelyn Khan with son Shawn and daughter Tina at
the marina on the James at Kingsmill.
Only a short walk away, we found the beauty of the James
River, offering a marina and an informal restaurant where
you can relax, enjoy a snack, sip a cocktail and watch the
river flow by. For fishing enthusiasts like myself, I heard the
stripers were hitting and the crab season would follow shortly
thereafter. We enjoyed all Kingsmill had to offer, then it
was off to our next stop, Ford's Colony, also in Williamsburg.
